National Flip Flop Day

As teachers we embrace holidays, celebrate them, and of course love to decorate for them. There are the big name holidays: Christmas, Halloween, & Valentine's Day. Then there are the days that you don't know exist like June 4th: Hug Your Cat Day, or June 28th: Insurance Awareness Day (so exciting). How about, June 7th: VCR Day?!

Of those often unknown "holidays" my favorite is: June 21st: FLIP FLOP DAY

I've always loved flip flops. Even when growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, I remember when Old Navy first started carrying a rainbow of flip flops in their stores. (Back in the day when flip flops became cool again). I love how free your feet feel, how they stand for summer & sun,  and how quick and convenient the shoes are.

I couldn't have told you that I would ever live in Florida....but here I am and boy do I love it.
In Florida, flip flops are like a uniform. There are casual flip flops, fancy flip flops, and the flip flops that want to be heels. I must admit, I have a wealth of all the varieties.

I remember living in Illinois and just waiting for the weather to warm up enough where we could turn over our clothes from winter clothes to spring/summer clothes and swap our winter shoes for lighter, more open spring/summer shoes. It was such a freeing feeling. Now, I get to experience that freeing joy all year!

So a little bit about National Flip Flop Day: (info from: The National Awareness Days Website

National Flip Flop Day will be taking place on Friday June 21st – so it's time to get those toes exposed and start enjoying summer!
The day is organized by Tropical Smoothie Cafe, a franchise in the USA that wants us to ditch our shoes and socks and get our flip flops on!
Now in its seventh year this annual extravaganza marks the start of summer, and customers who appear in one of the 300 stores between 2:00pm and 7:00pm in their flip flops get a free smoothie!
There is a serious side to the campaign though.   The company makes a donation for every customer that wears flip flops to Camp Sunshine.  This special camp was created in 1984 for children and their families who are dealing with life threatening illnesses like cancer, kidney diseases and lupus.
All sorts of support is available at the camp for both children and parents, and with the help of National Flip Flop Day they can continue doing their good work.
To find out more visit the National Flip Flop Day website and get your flip flops on!

So head over to Tropical Smoothie Next Friday sporting your flip flops!
Also be on the look out toward the end of June when Old Navy has flip flops on sale for $1. The date is not released yet (I looked). Last year it was June 30th. Keep your eyes peeled.

Next Friday, June 21st, my Flip Flop Addition Math Center will be on Sale (20% off) at my Teacher Pay Teachers Store in honor of National Flip Flop Day.

This math game explores the Commutative Property of Addition using 2 Digit Addition without regrouping (with the occasional 2 digit + 1 digit).

Students pick a card and write the equation in 2 ways, "flip-flopping" the addends. Includes:-Directions sheets-24 addend cards (2 addends on each card)-Blank Template cards for additional written-in addends

Nothing says summer more than time off and flip flops! Enjoy your summer and National Flip Flop Day!
